M. Abzar Uddin
Abzar Uddin belongs to Islampur village in Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and has been working as a handloom artisan for the past 12 years. He learned the trade from his elder brother, a highly experienced weaver who has been associated with the shawl weaving sector for more than two decades.
With a basic educational background and years of practical experience, Abzar has developed specialized expertise in preparing beam rollers, installing and calibrating handlooms, wool preparation, and weaving traditional men’s woolen shawls and thick winter shawls. His technical understanding of loom mechanics makes him a valuable artisan within the local weaving community.
Abzar dedicates around 10 hours daily to weaving activities. He generally completes 2–3 men’s shawls per day, each taking approximately 4 hours due to the decorative woven borders and finishing details. For simpler plain shawls, his daily output can reach 4–5 pieces.
Personal Message:
“Weaving has become an important part of my life. Through this craft I have gained valuable skills, earned a stable income, and contributed to keeping the traditional handloom industry alive in our village. Every shawl reflects the effort and experience of the artisan who makes it.”
